First results of the Sustainable Construction Site pilot shared

On June 21, 2023, an inspiring knowledge-sharing moment took place in the context of the project "The Sustainable Construction Site". Various stakeholders from the construction sector came together at the BSD project location of KWS in Helmond to discuss the steps we are taking towards this Sustainable Construction Site.

The event was organized by various parties, including KWS, with an emphasis on sharing knowledge and presenting the findings of the ongoing pilot.

Towards a sustainable construction site

The pilot, currently taking place from June 12 to 30, aims to test various sustainable solutions on the construction site. The main goal of this project is to be able to build completely emission-free during this period. In addition, the design and coordination of the various equipment and materials on the construction site is also an important aspect. KWS, as project partner of the pilot, has tested several electrically powered machines, including a band saw, vibrating plate, articulated mops and an 8.5 tonne crawler crane. An electric vacuum unit has been used in the construction of sustainable parking spaces. These lightweight and climate-adaptive parking spaces with CCL elements from CirculinQ temporarily collect rainwater and are also completely circular. This starts with the use of recycled plastic and is further reflected in the modular structure.

An essential part of the construction site design is also the power supply, where we focus on the use of a hydrozine (formic acid) generator in combination with solar panels. Participation in the pilot is of great value to KWS, because it allows them to look ahead to the future and meet the wishes of clients.

"By closely coordinating and monitoring all logistical movements, we can build more efficiently and, above all, more sustainably."

BouwHub for sustainable logistics

In addition to the development of the sustainable construction site, this pilot is also part of an intended larger development on the BSD site, namely the establishment of a central Construction Hub for the Helmond region. This Construction Hub, an initiative of VWML, will function as the central point for construction logistics and will be specifically designed to achieve the various objectives of the BSD area, including Social Return and circularity.
